FLASHBACK TO DAMON’S LIFE IN 1970s NEW YORK / THE BAND DEAD SARA PERFORMS — Realizing that Elena (Nina Dobrev) needs some time away from Mystic Falls, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) takes her to New York City, where he lived and partied hard in the 1970s. When Rebekah (Claire Holt) also shows up in New York, she’s impressed with Elena’s secret agenda. Flashbacks reveal Damon’s hedonistic life in the underground club scene and a complicated encounter with Lexi (guest star Arielle Kebbel). Meanwhile, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) try to convince Klaus (Joseph Morgan) that it would be in his own best interest to help them track Silas down, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) struggles to keep her grasp on reality and do the right thing. Garreth Stover directed the episode written by Brian Young & Charlie Charbonneau (#417).

Funny how they continue to go to the guy they've lied to, manipulated, and tried to kill (not to mention HAVE killed some of his siblings) for help. Klaus should tell them they're on their own with their Silas problem.

Most of the time the episode titles are taking after a movie, poem, book, etc. Does the episode ever have anything to do with the media that it is titled after? I put "Because the Night" by Patti Smith on my Spotify list because I was inspired by the title of this episode.

The day before he hinted at getting physical and we all said that was for 4x18. Laughing forever that Damon might have been homeless during the 70's.

Is anyone else over all these Lexi comebacks? I mean, I loved her and her friendship with Stefan, but if the show wants to keep bringing dead people back they could try someone new for once...
As for homeless Damon, I can't even. lol

Was he too good to compel a place to stay back then? Less homes were probably being foreclosed on back then, so no handy foreclosures to stay at. I think he was just thinking the homeless population were good snacks.

As for homeless Damon, I can't even. lol I was over Lexi after the last flashback where she was shown purposely trying to keep the brothers apart. It's big shame what they've done to Lexi. She was a fun character in her first episode but the more glimpses we've gotten of her the more unlikeable she gets.

The tough love detox for Stefan's bloodlust was hard to see. Then the 40s episode. And making a ripper that was only reformed for 20 years go to war for his penance. Ummm...20 years isn't much in the lifetime of a vampire. Did Stefan even know he was going to be a vampire? I thought Katherine snuck him her blood.
